Mentor: Kim Statham
Hi there! I am a huge nature enthusiast, passionate about all things outdoors. I am currently completing my MSc in Entomology studying the diversity of wild insect pollinators in and around cranberry bogs. Insects are a big passion of mine but I also love to go birding and mushroom foraging in my spare time. I am also an avid camper and hiker and love being outside. With a BSc in Biology and a background in Environmental & Wildlife Management, I am hoping to jump into a career in wildlife conservation in the near future.

Shay Pokharel
Mentor: Cassie Barker
Hello! My name is Shay and I'm a recent B.Sc Biology graduate. I'm interested in environmental policy making and climate change research and I hope to be actively involved in making positive change for our environment. During my undergraduate years, I always looked for opportunities where I could explore my interests and develop my skills. In my second and third year of university, I was involved in EarthSuds as an executive member responsible for research and development. EarthSuds is a startup company that aims to eliminate single-use plastic waste by creating more sustainable solutions.
In my fourth year, I had the amazing opportunity to work as a Research Assistant with the Forest Ecology Research Group and complete my thesis with the Wilson Lab. As a Research Assistant I was able to actively engage in learning about ongoing projects in the lab and enjoyed contributing towards data collection. Secondly, my thesis taught me the process behind what it takes to write a paper and the responsibility and dedication behind this endeavour. These experiences have further solidified my admiration for academia and they have provided me with essential skills that I can apply towards my masters.

Freydig Cohoon Gallego
Mentor: Samantha Casey
My name is Freydig, and I am entering my final year studying environmental engineering at Western University. My career goal is to work in the forest ecology sector, as I wish to contribute positively and connect to our natural environment. I want to ensure that the way in which we manage our forests is done in a manner that is beneficial to environmental and human health. I am looking forward to graduating and joining a strong and dedicated workforce that is equally committed to problem solving for the benefit of our planet.
Having grown up in London, Ontario, I recall exploring natural trails around the City and swimming in the local streams. Now, with an increased understanding of the degraded water quality of our local rivers and streams, I want to guarantee that future generations may continue to enjoy Ontario’s abundant fresh water bodies and the vibrant and unique ecosystems that surround us. I have previous experience working for a non-profit tree planting service, where I had on the ground participation in greening London's urban spaces, while working with community volunteers to help them to connect with our natural world. In my free time I frequent trails and enjoy photographing our fellow plants and fungi.
